Travel like the wind, arrive without attachment.
To pass through in order to learn,
and to depart without carrying anything with us.
In a single day of twenty-four hours, we exchange our time for spaces of happiness, fulfillment, and disappointment. Within these fleeting moments of emotion, it is impossible to deny that everything we desire comes with both gain and loss intertwined. Acceptance and understanding allow us to see the beauty of the whole—much like climbing a steep mountain, regardless of what the path brings. Along the way, we encounter both physical obstacles in the outer world and inner conflicts within the mind. To obtain everything we wish for without giving up anything in return is, in truth, exceedingly difficult in real life.
A single day spent traveling to some place inevitably affects the days that follow—whether over a week or across all 365 days of a year. Every experience calls on us to open our hearts and perceive another side of reality. How much effort must humanity exert to overcome the obstacles of nature? From the concrete roads laid in the early stages to the large stone slabs cut and shaped into smooth pathways, each stretch tells a story of persistence. As the mountain motorcycle slowly navigates each curve, looking down reveals ridgelines far below. Without familiarity with the route, it would not be unlikely for me to be thrown off the mountain.
Trust, therefore, is something we must learn—no matter how frightening the road may be. With an experienced guide, someone who walks this path as part of daily life, there is at least a sense of direction: knowing where to turn, where to avoid danger, and how to lead us to our destination. Before long, after passing countless bends along the ridgeline, the courtyard of a temple comes into view, along with resting pavilions, monks’ quarters, and the staircase leading up to the Mahabodhi stupa.
At the cliff’s edge—after pushing through fallen branches blocking the path—I reached the base of the rock face. There were bamboo platforms, partially decayed, and traces of old shelters. A small monk’s hut still rested quietly within a crevice. I climbed toward the highest point of the rocky slope, which served as a natural barrier against sun, wind, and rain, then stopped to gaze upon a wide circular clearing. I searched for the image said to have existed there for thousands of years, yet in the end, I could not see it.
When we journey toward a destination, we often expect the outcome we have imagined. But when reality does not align with those expectations, the ability to adjust and to open ourselves to acceptance becomes essential.
The sound of the mountain motorcycle gradually faded away. The image of the teacher and the pack of dogs slowly disappeared. Another day had passed, leaving me with the feeling that this journey had reached its destination in quiet joy. I crossed a suspension bridge and looked down at the murky water flowing gently below—yet the local guide who once led the way was no longer there.
A lifetime, and everything we hope to accomplish within it, must ultimately begin with a heart that refuses to surrender to any obstacle.
