Travel Like the Wind : Suchart Choolee
For some destinations,
the journey isn’t measured in distance, but in the depth of feeling —
the quiet courage of a heart pulled forward by unseen threads of meaning. The purposeful spirit walks not toward a place, but into a becoming and “Ban Rak Thai” in Mae Hong Son province is one such place. It is a small village tucked away in the embrace of mountains and a lake, where time seems to slow down, accompanied by a history that is still very much alive.
From the annals of mainland China’s political history, this is the home of Yunnanese Chinese, former soldiers of the Kuomintang (KMT)’s 93rd Division who migrated across the border into Thailand after the communist revolution. They were not just travelers, but refugees who brought with them their culture and a warrior’s spirit. In the early days, they assisted the Thai government in fighting and suppressing communist insurgents, eventually earning recognition and Thai citizenship.
.
When the war ended, these valiant soldiers laid down their arms and picked up hoes and spades, transforming former battlegrounds into fertile agricultural land. Through the royal grace of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), who promoted the cultivation of tea and other cool-climate crops, the main occupations of the Ban Rak Thai villagers today are tea cultivation—especially high-quality Oolong tea, whose fragrant aroma fills the entire valley—and cultural tourism, which has become a magnet for travelers seeking tranquility and beauty.
The enchanting charm of Ban Rak Thai that captivates everyone is the image of the lake in the center of the village, where a soft white mist drifts across the water’s surface in the morning. A highlight activity is taking a boat ride in a traditional Yunnanese style, admiring the view of the village houses lining the lakeside. The earthen architecture and red lanterns that adorn the area make you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. The way of life here remains simple and deeply connected to traditional culture. The people still speak the Yunnanese dialect and enjoy unique dishes such as fried mantou, Yunnan-style pork leg, and black chicken stewed with Chinese herbs. And, of course, no visit is complete without sipping hot tea in a teahouse overlooking the sprawling, terraced tea plantations.
A visit to Ban Rak Thai is more than just a trip; it’s a journey that lets us “Travel Like the Wind,” allowing the breeze to carry our spirits to touch the beauty of nature, learn its incredible history, and absorb its serene way of life. Here, the wind doesn’t just pass over your body; it becomes etched in your memory, reminding us that a true journey is about discovering the stories along the way and the hidden meanings within a place.
