Candlelight Shines Through the Archway, Along the “Chanun” Path of Wat Maheyong, Ayutthaya The Path Once Walked by Ancient Kings.
Travel like the wind - Suchart Choolee
From the moment candlelight flickers through the archway and down the “Chanun” — a secret pathway that stretches quietly into the inner sanctuary of Wat Maheyong — illuminates not just ancient stones, but centuries of royal footsteps. This solemn route, once reserved for kings and nobles, carries with it an unspoken grandeur, dignity, and sacred reverence.
The “Chanun” is far more than just a walkway. a corridor of power, designed with a profound understanding of sacred space in ancient Thai architecture. Tall walls rise on both sides, offering not only privacy but also a symbolic gesture of honor and protection for the monarchy, shielding their sacred presence from public view.
After the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, Wat Maheyong was abandoned to silence, decay, and time — much like history itself, buried under the ashes of war. Until 1984 that Phra Khru Kasem Thammathat revived the temple grounds, establishing a meditation center. From that point onward, faith slowly returned, like candle flames rekindled one by one in the quiet of a prayerful night.
The origins of Wat Maheyong remain a mystery. Some believe dates back to the Ayodhya period, built by Queen Kalyani, consort of King Thammaracha. Others attribute the foundation to King Borommarachathirat II (known as Chao Sam Phraya), who reportedly established in 1424. Regardless of its founding era, the temple is widely regarded as a vital center for Vipassana meditation in the golden age of Ayutthaya.
Candle flames sway in the breeze, breathing life into the magnificent ruins — the towering ordination hall and the majestic chedi surrounded by 80 stucco elephants — timeless structures that echo the spiritual greatness of the past. Especially the “Chanun” pathway, which has transformed into a path of faith. Today, those seeking peace walk the very same ground once graced by kings, each step humbly echoing history.
Wat Maheyong is no longer a forgotten ruin, but a sanctuary of the soul — a place where the past, present, and future meet. The candlelight lit in these quiet nights symbolizes not only wisdom and awakening, but a deep hope — a hope to preserve the spiritual, artistic, and cultural heritage of Thailand for generations to come.
