Travel like the wind : Suchart Choolee

As the End of Buddhist Lent approaches, the sound of temple bells echoes from the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Pathum Thani, as if calling everyone to wake early and take part in one of the most revered Buddhist traditions — “Tak Bat Phra Roi” (Offering Alms to a Hundred Monks). The image of one hundred monks seated in neat rows on paddle boats, receiving alms under the softly falling rain and overcast sky, is one of serene faith and beauty.

This centuries-old tradition is unique to Pathum Thani. It takes place annually on the 1st waning moon day of the 11th lunar month, when monks from various temples along both sides of the Chao Phraya River gather to take part. A draw is held to assign the order of alms procession, a system that reflects the harmonious organization of this large-scale spiritual event.

Despite the often cloudy skies and pouring rain, a rainbow frequently arcs across the opposite bank, as if the heavens themselves are celebrating with the faithful. The chanting of prayers floats in the wind, blending with the sight of villagers lining up along the riverbank — offering dry food, rice, and traditional sweets. Even soaked to the skin, no one leaves. The devotion is unwavering.

Soaked monks walking solemnly, elders offering alms with peaceful grace, and young children smiling through the rain — these images speak volumes: faith transcends all obstacles, even nature’s fiercest trials.

Even as the temple courtyards are drenched with rain, they are filled with joy. The smiles of those who have made merit radiate a fulfillment that no words can truly capture — a joy more refreshing than the rain itself.

And so, Tak Bat Phra Roi in Pathum Thani is not merely a religious ceremony, but a spiritual current that connects hearts across the entire community.
This year, if you have the chance, come and experience it for yourself. Then you’ll understand why this tradition continues to live on — timeless and profoundly beautiful.
