Travel Like the Wind : Suchart Choolee

Once upon a time, the rivers and canals were the beating heart of Thai life. These waterways were the lifeblood that sustained entire communities. People depended on the water to eat, travel, trade, and perform sacred rituals. They were more than mere routes of passage — they were the cradle of Thai art, culture, and wisdom, all blossoming from the gentle flow of the river itself.

As time drifted on, Thai society gradually turned its face toward the roads and its back toward the canals. The bond with the water that once nourished life began to fade, quietly slipping into memory. Yet the beauty of the river was never only in the boats that glided upon its surface, but in the hands that paddled — hands moving in rhythm with the current, in harmony with the pulse of life. Along both banks, the whispers of this connection still linger — in the wooden houses, the old temples, and the ripples that tell timeless tales of simplicity and grace.

Then came the tide of industrial progress. Roads became the new symbols of modernity, and people abandoned the canals that had once been their main thoroughfares. The riverside way of life slowly disappeared, leaving behind only traces — sepia photographs, fading memories, and stories told by elders who still remember the soft sound of oars slicing through the calm morning tide.

Yet, not all has vanished. The floating markets remain as living testaments to that watery heritage, nourishing Thai society since the Ayutthaya era. Villagers once paddled their boats to barter and trade amid lively chatter, laughter mingling with the splash of water. Some markets — Bang Khae, Mahanak, and Ong Ang — still breathe with life today, revived with a renewed spirit and purpose.

The traditional Thai houses and floating homes that line the waterways reveal a wisdom deeply attuned to nature — built to catch the breeze, drain the rain, and embody the grace of simple, sustainable living. The beauty of water has never been far away; it has always been here, waiting to be rediscovered, cherished, and celebrated within our own homeland.

Though pollution and waste still trouble many canals, a new generation has begun to raise its voice for preservation. With hopeful hearts, they strive to restore and celebrate the riverside way of life, believing that its quiet beauty is second to none in the world.

Even if we did not grow up by the river, nor wake to the sound of paddles at dawn, the water still flows within the veins of every Thai.
Water is life — the root of our identity and the living current that connects the past, the present, and the future in one unbroken stream.

When we finally turn again to face the river, we may realize that true progress does not lie upon the wide, paved road, but within the hearts of those who still know how to move with the flow.
