Travel like the wind : Suchart Choolee
Laplae, a small district in Uttaradit Province, offers more than just a location on the map—a place shaped by legend, enriched with history, and defined by a culture found nowhere else. Every corner of this secluded area holds quiet allure, true to the name meaning “invisible” or “hidden from sight.”
What draws travelers to Laplae first is the captivating legend surrounding the district. The name stems from a remote position nestled among mountains, once serving as a haven for those in search of refuge. One of the most cherished stories is that of the Widow’s Town, recounting the tale of a man who stumbled upon a village inhabited only by women known for unwavering honesty. After marrying one of them, the man was ultimately forced to leave after breaking a promise and telling a lie. This story weaves both mystery and a strong moral fabric into local identity. A sculpture of the widow near the town entrance stands as a graceful reminder of this enduring tale.

Laplae also offers deep historical roots. Inscriptions at Wat Chedi Khiri Wihan suggest origins dating back to the Sukhothai period. Influences from both Sukhothai and Lanna traditions shape daily life—reflected in local speech, attire, and the celebrated teen jok woven textiles. Sacred places such as Phra Thaen Sila At serve as a testament to spiritual devotion and an era of prosperity that once thrived in the area.
Equally remarkable is the region’s natural abundance, leading to the affectionate nickname “the edible valley.” Orchards produce uniquely sweet and aromatic durian varieties—Long Laplae and Lin Laplae—as well as beloved langsat fruit. Complementing these flavors is khao pan pak, a local dish made from rice and fresh vegetables, showcasing the spirit of communal living. Forested hills, terraced orchards, and the refreshing flow of Mae Phun Waterfall complete the portrait of an area rich in natural beauty.
Once hidden from the world, Laplae now invites all to witness its charm firsthand. Visitors are welcomed with genuine smiles, flavorful local cuisine, masterful handicrafts, and the living legacy of figures like Phra Si Phanom Mat and Chao Fa Ham Kumara, a legendary hero.
This district stands as a reminder that even the smallest places can carry profound stories. Here, legend and fact, nature and culture, past and present come together—ready to share their beauty with every curious traveler.
