Travel Like the Wind

By Suchart Choolee

After a gentle rain had fallen,I walked along Phan Fa Road, an old yet lively stretch of Bangkok where the pulse of the city beats between past and present. At that moment, the city seemed to mirror two worlds—one of change, driven by the subway construction ahead, and another of the past, steadfast and beautifully preserved all around.

Mahakan Fort stands prominently near Phan Fa Lilat Bridge, as if keeping watch over the capital’s long and storied history. From that vantage point, the golden summit of the Golden Mount (Wat Phu Khao Thong) rises above the rooftops of the old city. Soft sunlight after the rain makes the chedi gleam with radiant gold, as though a veil of sky-blue mist is reaching out to touch its peak.

The gaze of passersby was drawn not only to the Golden Mount or the ancient fort, but to the Loha Prasat of Wat Ratchanatdaram—Thailand’s, and the world’s, only metal castle. Hundreds of shimmering spires glistened in reflected light, standing in elegant contrast amid modern buildings. A bridge between treasured heritage and contemporary urban life, the interplay of light and shadow across each metal finial seemed to whisper deep stories of Thai artistry.

Nearby stood the statue of King Nangklao (Rama III), known as the “Tycoon of the Chakri Dynasty” for his exceptional skill in maritime trade. His reign brought prosperity through flourishing international commerce, the restoration and construction of numerous temples, and the Red Pouch Treasury, a legacy reflecting visionary economic insight.

During the early Rattanakosin era, King Nangklao earned renown as the “Merchant King.” Beginning trade in youth, he applied accumulated knowledge to elevate the kingdom’s prosperity in politics, religion, and economy, earning lasting recognition as the “Father of Thai Commerce.”

As a gentle breeze drifted through the post-rain air, the city seemed to breathe in unison. I strolled slowly, letting the wind carry my thoughts, as though walking through a living tapestry of history. My steps moved unhurriedly, yet my heart soared freely—like the wind sweeping past.

Travel like the wind is not about walking fast. It is about letting the heart absorb everything—light, sound, scent, and the hidden stories in every corner. Walking this way revealed the true beauty of Bangkok after the rain.
