Travel like the wind : Suchart Choolee
Flame tree blossoms scatter across the grounds, creating a vibrant red carpet to welcome visitors. Tourists of all ages ascend the grand Naga Bridge, leading to the sacred sanctuary perched atop an extinct volcano, dormant for a millennium. This is Phanom Rung Sanctuary, a temple built in devotion to Lord Shiva, the great deity in the Hindu faith.
Passing through the first gateway, the grandeur of ancient Khmer architecture unfolds before the eyes. The exquisite and spectacular carvings, especially the “Reclining Vishnu” lintel above the main sanctuary’s entrance, are so perfectly preserved and beautiful that they have become a priceless national treasure—a testament to the faith and genius of ancient artisans. As one steps deeper into the central sanctuary hall, which houses the Shiva Linga—the highest object of worship, the very essence of the cosmos—the solemn atmosphere allows you to feel the power of faith that once sustained the people of this land for centuries.
Phanom Rung is not merely a structure of sandstone; it is a spiritual center built by humans to connect with the divine. They prayed to the guardian deities, asking for peace and tranquility to grace the land.
Yet, standing amidst the grandeur of this temple, one’s thoughts are drawn to reflect on the reality of the world. If only the sacred deities could see our suffering and inspire a resolution to the simmering conflicts, preventing forces from clashing with one another. However, the undeniable truth is that in any era, as long as humanity is bound by love, greed, anger, and delusion, conflict and war are inescapable. The history of humankind has proven this truth time and again.
Thus, Phanom Rung Sanctuary is not just a beautiful ancient site; it is also a great mirror, reflecting both our profound faith and, at the same time, the timeless truths of life and human desires that never change. It stands in silence, watching the rise and fall of human glory and conflict, a cycle that repeats… for all eternity.
Note: The Phanom Rung Solar Alignment
The phenomenon of the sun aligning perfectly to shine through all 15 doorways of Phanom Rung Sanctuary is a remarkable astronomical and architectural event that occurs four times a year: two sunsets and two sunrises.
Event Schedule:
- Sunset Alignment (shining through the 15 doorways)
- 1st Event: Around March 5-7 each year (approx. 6:15 PM)
- 2nd Event: Around October 5-7 each year (approx. 5:55 PM)
- Sunrise Alignment (shining through the 15 doorways)
-
- 3rd Event: Around April 3-5 each year (approx. 6:03 AM)
- 4th Event: Around September 8-10 each year (approx. 5:57 AM)
Meaning and Significance
This phenomenon showcases the profound wisdom of the ancient Khmer people in designing architecture that harmonizes with natural phenomena.
- Axis of the Earth and the Cosmos: The castle was built on an east-west axis along the ridgeline of Phanom Rung mountain. This precise alignment allows the sun to shine through the doorways from east to west (and vice versa) on the specific days when the sun’s path reaches the correct position.
- Religious Beliefs: It is related to the Hindu belief that the sanctuary represents Mount Meru, the center of the universe. The sunlight shining through its center is believed to bestow sacred power and supreme blessings upon the sanctuary and its worshippers.
