Travel Like the Wind : Suchart Choolee
The breath of dawn carries a cool, refreshing mist, mingled with the scent of the earth and the forest. This early morning breeze sweeping across the mountaintops of Aiyerweng, in Betong District, Yala Province, is the first signal that awakens travelers from their slumber, bidding them to witness the spectacle about to unfold. Even on days when the famed sea of mist is but a delicate veil, the magnificence of the landscape is never diminished.
An emerald-green forest, like a giant velvet carpet woven by nature, stretches as far as the eye can see, enveloping a complex tapestry of mountains. Below, the Pattani River snakes its way through the winding curves of the valley, its surface catching the first light of day and shimmering like a slumbering silver dragon. This is the first glimpse into the magic of Betong, the land known as “Siam’s Southernmost Land, a Beautiful Border Town.”.
At the highest point, on a peak 2,038 feet above sea level, stands the “Aiyerweng Sea of Mist Skywalk,” a landmark that officially opened in 2020. This state-of-the-art steel structure, featuring a long, cantilevered walkway with a glass floor, challenges the courage of its visitors. To walk upon this skywalk is to feel as if you are floating in mid-air; it is a bridge that connects the human heart to the sky and the vast wilderness below. It is more than just a tourist attraction; it is a symbol of development and hope, shifting perceptions and revealing the hidden potential of this land at the tip of Thailand’s southern peninsula.
Ultimately, a journey to Aiyerweng is truly to “travel like the wind.” It is a wind that carries us to witness nature’s profound beauty, a wind that blows away misconceptions and fear, and a wind that allows us to carry precious memories back home.Standing on the Aiyerweng Skywalk is more than just sightseeing;
it is about gaining a new perspectiveon Thailand’s southernmost region.
Here, there is not just a sea of mist to admire, but a rich history, an abundant nature, and the warm hearts of its people, waiting for every traveler to experience and cherish in their memory forever.
